PRP A Promising New Way to Regrow Your Mane

How can blood help regrow hair?

Researchers can regrow hair in patients with baldness with a series of injections known as platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy. PRP is nothing new, but experts have recently begun to investigate its possible role in the regrowth of hair. The treatment involves removing the patient’s blood and turning it in a centrifuge to separate the plasma from the red and white blood cells. After adding nutrients such as proteins, platelets and growth factors are collected from the sample and injected into the scalp where the hair is thinning. The procedure is not surgical and only requires local anesthesia.

Sports medicine has used PRP for years to treat Achilles tendon injuries, joints and muscles by stimulating stem cells. In the case of hair loss, injected platelets induce inactive or newly implanted hair follicles to enter an active growth phase, which causes the hair to start growing again.

Who’s a good candidate for PRP?

PRP addresses androgenetic alopecia, the thinning of hereditary hair that affects both men and women. Experts believe that it can also be effective for women with traction alopecia, thinning hair caused by too tight a ponytail, braids and other styles that tear the hair. According to the researchers, the best candidates are people who have recently started losing hair. PRP will not work for anyone who is completely bald and will not grow all the lost hair.

How well does PRP work?

Clinical studies on the effectiveness of PRP and the longevity of the results are inconclusive, mainly due to the fact that there is no standardized procedure and different professionals use different formulas and injection strategies.

A study that included 11 patients found “a significant reduction in hair loss” between the first injection and the fourth, and an increase in the average number of hair follicles per square centimeter of the scalp was observed. Another study of 20 patients concluded that PRP “may have a positive therapeutic effect” on male and female hair loss without significant side effects, but more research is needed to confirm its efficacy.

PRP as a treatment for hair loss

But a reputation has developed among cosmetic surgeons, sports medicine doctors and orthopedic doctors as an effective tool.

Is PRP right for you?

If you are interested in getting more information on PRP or any other topical, oral or surgical hair loss treatment, it is best to evaluate your options with your primary care provider. A medical professional can offer guidance and review the risks and benefits of each method. Until there is more evidence to support the effectiveness of PRP treatment of hair loss, you may want to discuss other options.

“PRP is promising, but we are only in the initial stages of the investigation,”. “We will need more randomized, placebo-controlled trials to truly establish PRP as a safe, minimally invasive and cost-effective treatment.”
