Online tax return in 3 easy steps

If you’ve ever filed an online tax return, you know what it’s like. It’s easy at first, but then as you’re asked for more and more information and forget what you’ve previously reported, what you’ve done this year, etc., it gets harder. Not so hard that you can’t answer – but hard enough that some preparation would have been very helpful. So here are three simple steps that will ensure you get from start to finish much faster this year.

  • Sign up with several online tax preparation services. In most cases, companies don’t charge until you’ve filed your taxes (and you should definitely avoid the ones that charge before then). Since it’s free to try – do it! You don’t have to delve too deeply into the forms, just log in and spend a few minutes. Does the user interface make sense to you? Is it logical? Does the page load correctly? Use these tests to decide which service you want to use. Tax Agent in Melbourne
  • Gather all the necessary information ahead of time. It’s amazing how many people start their online tax return and forget this step. If you have your tax bill, information from last year’s tax return, etc. on hand, the process is much, much easier. Instead of digging around your home trying to get it all together, you have it all in front of you. Bonus points if you keep it organized! The faster you can get the information you need, the faster you can get everything done.
  • Save your work. Some people learn this lesson the hard way – don’t be one of them. When you start filing your online tax return, start saving! One way to do this is to use an online tax program that automatically saves, but it’s never a bad idea to save that work. If you can’t click the “Save” button when you submit, try taking screenshots (or write everything down by hand). That way you can save the key numbers in case something goes wrong.

These three simple steps won’t make your tax return any easier, but they should make you less stressed. Don’t let them scare you away from filing your taxes online this year. Follow these steps, take some time to do it, and breathe easy. It will be over soon.
